Course Description:

The first semester course includes language, literature, and composition.  You will study British literature chronologically, beginning with the nineteenth century and concluding with the twentieth.  In order to understand and interpret the literature, you will also learn the historical and social backgrounds of the literary periods.  You will study various literary forms and learn how they evolved.  It is intended that throughout this course that you will not only find the study of English literature and language fascinating, but that you will also see its connection to American literature.  This will help you will appreciate the significant role it has played in world culture.  This course will have you practice Standard English paragraph writing and essay development.

The second semester course is the equivalent to the second semester of twelfth-grade English.  The course includes the study of language, literature, and composition.  It is a survey of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon or Old English period through the eighteenth century.  You will read about the history and social life of England in order to understand how the language and literature developed.  You will study the various literary forms and learn to interpret literature.  You will practice Standard English, paragraph writing, essay development, and the elements of a research paper in your writing assignments.  You will learn the steps in the writing process and organizing and editing for clarity, grammar, and mechanics.
